Allen Lane The Penguin Press
With Penguin Books, Allen Lane became the leading paperback publisher in Britain. However, he started his career in publishing working for his cousin John Lane at the Bodley Head producing good quality hardback books. Those books had the imprint of 'John Lane The Bodley Head'. Allen Lane was keen to also publish hardback originals and ALLEN LANE THE PENGUIN PRESS began in August 1966, with the imprint consciously echoing the style of the earlier Bodley Head imprint.

This also coincided with Penguin chief editor Tony Godwin's desire to found a hardback imprint within Penguin. While Allen Lane was motivated by the desire to have a good quality hardback imprint, Godwin was aware that authors wanted their books in hardback as well as paperback and that this affected royalty rates. It was agreed that the new imprint should consist of non-fiction titles only.

By serendipity, Allen Lane happened to notice that John Lane's old premises of 'The Bodley Head' at 8 Vigo Street was available to rent and he immediately acquired the lease. Lane felt that he had come full-circle back to where he began fifty years earlier. He could now publish his hardbacks from these premises. The books were of elegant design and printed on cream coloured paper.

Many of the Allen Lane The Penguin Press books were later (or in a few cases, had already been) published in other Penguin Books paperback imprints. Later editions of at least two early titles were published both in hardback and as Allen Lane paperbacks!

Using his personal collection, Andrew Malin has provided images and much of the information on the Allen Lane The Penguin Press books given below. The images have been scanned by him. We are very grateful to Andrew.

This first book project was very much a celebratory or 'vanity' project by Allen Lane with echoes of the high quality books produced by John Lane at the Bodley Head. It was a niche book, focusing on his own profession - the book trade, and limited in number as only 750 sets were being produced for Allen Lane. And it was also hugely expensive. As advised in the advanced letter sent out "A book so long in the making and produced with such meticulous care cannot be cheap." It cost £21.10s in 1966 (about £350 today) or the equivalent of the cost of about 60 Penguin paperbacks at the time. However, for advanced sales before 30 June 1966, there was a special subsrciption price of £16.

The front page of the prospectus explains:
Throughout its history the book trade with all its branches and variants has inspired artists of various ages and countries to depict its many activities. »Bibliopola« offers the first iconography of such material, chosen from European, Asiatic, American and African sources. In Volume Il, on 258 plates in chronological order - of which 42 in colour - book stores, antiquarian and second-hand bookshops, circulating libraries, itinerant booksellers, book auction sales, scenes inside bookshops, print sellers and whoever else belongs to this great family are shown. Each plate is accompanied by bibliographical notes and an explanatory description. The introductory Volume I contains 300 details from the plates divided into thematic groups. They and the text that goes with them show the historical development of the exterior and interior of bookshops etc. and also comment upon many other subjects from the book trade in general. Here, again, European examples go hand in hand with Oriental and American ones. Volume II further contains an anthology of texts concern ing the book trade, written during the past 2000 years. On each opening an attempt has been made to find a text matching the period and country of every plate. The work is entirely trilingual (English, French, German). Several indexes form a key to the contents.
