THE PENGUIN FILM REVIEW Periodical

'FR' 1 - 9

This periodical was published in nine issues between August 1946 and May 1949.

Each of the volumes of the book has a good number of photographic plates, illustrations of film stills. The first five issues were in a slightly larger size of 8 x 5 inches format. The other periodicals were in the usual Penguin size. Though they sold around 25,000 copies of each, there was not as much demand for these books as the usual Penguins, and after the 9th was published it was decided to cease printing.

The periodical was initally edited by a group of three: R. K. Neilson Baxter, Roger Manvell and H. H. Wollenberg. After the first volume, Roger Manvell became the Executive Editor of the series, and he also selected all the photographs of film stills for inclusion in the Film Reviews. All three members of the editorial team were prolific in contributing articles to the whole series.

After ceasing to print the Penguin Film Review, the series was succeeded for another three years by Penguin publishing three Pelicans all edited by Roger Manvell: The Cinema (1950) A226; The Cinema (1951) A233; The Cinema (1952) A260. The cover of Pelican A226 states "The first volume of an annual publication, designed to take the place of the Penguin Film Review".

It is worth noting that the complete set of The Penguin Film Review 1946-1949, comprising some 1,376 pages, 159 articles and over 500 stills was published in two volumes as a reprint by Taylor and Francis in 1977, both in paperback and hardback format. An additional entry is provided below the Penguin series.

We are pleased to include with each separate entry a full list of the contents of each volume of The Penguin Film Review.
